Day 4 - Salzburg
Before I begin the Salzburg portion of our adventure, let me note a few surprises in Vienna.
First of all, Starbucks. Who needs it here?! It's like an infestation.
Secondly, cannibus dispensaries. Don't know why, but it just doesn't fit with my impression of rule-obiding, neat-as-a-pin Austria, even though there are too many smokers here. Must be the sun-bathers.
Thirdly, phone booths. There are still a few around Vienna.
Lastly, at the hotel breakfast buffet carefully read the little packet descriptions. Next to the Nutella you'll find veal and turkey paté. For breakfast. Jelly can be found near the yogurt.
On to Mozart & Sound of Music country...
Is there any place in Austria that isn't green and neat? We were in awe the whole train ride here.
Salzburg is yet another beautiful, very walkable city. We tried to trace a self-guided Mozart walking tour but got turned around a few times. We weren't trying very hard to follow the map, as it was closing time. While looking for the St Stephens cemetery where some of Mozart's family is buried, we turned into the Mirabelle Palace gardens, so colorful and manicured.
The pedestrian bridge is covered with small red paddle locks. Wonder what that's about. Isn't there something similar in Paris?
Mozart is not the only significant person to hail from Salzburg. Christian Doppler, as in the Doppler effect, is another fine Salzburger.
Here's the link we found helpful for our self-guided Mozart tour:
Tomorrow we'll seek some cool geology.
